Mass Effect 2 PC review
ME2 PC is nothing short of spectacular. The graphics are amazing. The city's vistas are truly fabulous. Their designs are quite good, although the Citadelle has been scale down considerably. The characters are very detailed and there are very little graphic glitches. The facial animations are a mix bag of great and stiff. Actually the one that is weaker is Sheppard himself, all the other characters are well facial animated and convey a good range of emotions. The cutscenes are also in the range of amazing, with great special effects, precision and vibrant colours.
The sounds are as good as the first Mass Effect. A great orchestral soundtrack. The voice overs are just superb, made by various artists like Claudia Black, Micheal Dorn, Seth Green and so much more…All the various sounds for ambiance are spot on and elevate the game.
The story is a nice follow up to the original, and you don't need to have played the first one to understand it. I appreciated the politics and morale of the story. Although this time around you see a lot less of politics but a bit more of morale choices.
The gameplay has been tweak from the first release. It feels a bit more like a shooter now…but you can't go and blast everything. You have to use the cover system and protect yourself because you are always the main target. The game interface is good and easy to pick up. However I didn't like the system regarding Upgrades…it felt confusing at first but all too simple. You buy the power and that's about it…i felt unsatisfied by the simplicity of it. Scanning planets for minerals is ok. It's a nice change from the main quest but gets old very fast. Maybe another level of interaction would have been more interesting then just scanning and launching probe. I also wished there would be more off planet mission to discover with the scanning…in that sens I missed riding a vehicle which was removed from that release. Hacking with symbols is hard at first, but very easy after a while. I think it should have been the opposite. Text hacking was fun. The side quests are very interesting and I like what it brought to the world and the story of each characters. There are some bugs, and most of them revolves around path finding. Sometimes you get a teammate that get stuck somewhere…Apart this the game runs fine.
Overall, Mass effect 2 is spectacular, deep and a fun shooter/RPG. It's intense and a product of high quality. The story, the visual, the sounds are making a package that is worth any Hollywood productions. ME2 is way up there with the stellar releases in gaming, and I can't wait for the last one of the trilogy.
